Our areas of focus include improving access to care, deepening understanding of outcome predictors, and developing and implementing targeted therapies. Our research programs investigate injuries ranging from sports concussion to combat blast injury, injuries in unique subpopulations such as military special operators or those with co-occurring substance use disorders, person-centered goal directed care, rehabilitation of vestibular and cognitive functioning, and development and implementation of technology delivered interventions. These efforts support us in offering innovative care in the <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherd.org\/treatment\/services-clinics\/share\/\">SHARE Military Initiative<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherd.org\/treatment\/services-clinics\/concussion-clinic\/\">Complex Concussion Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\">\n\t<div class=\"idf-block text-content\">\n\t\t<h2>Current research studies<\/h2>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--accordion idf-block accordion\" id=\"accordionFlush3193\">\n            <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n      <h3 class=\"accordion__title\" id=\"flush-heading_3193_1\">\n        <button class=\"accordion__trigger\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#flush-collapse_3193_1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"flush-collapse_3193_1\">\n          Expanding access to mtbi treatment for veterans and service members with co-occurring substance use<span class=\"sp-before-icon\"><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h3>\n      <\/h2>\n      <div role=\"region\" id=\"flush-collapse_3193_1\" class=\"accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"flush-heading_3193_1\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordionFlush3193\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__content-wrap text-content\"><h4>Purpose<\/h4>\n<p>The purpose of this clinical trial is to assess treatment retention and outcomes for Veterans and service members with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and co-occurring substance use following participation in a substance use intervention delivered as part of intensive interdisciplinary mTBI care. Funding for this current effort is provided by the Department of Defense (grant no. TP230246) and previous funding was provided by the Arthur Blank Family Foundation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                                  <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n          <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n      <h3 class=\"accordion__title\" id=\"flush-heading_3193_2\">\n        <button class=\"accordion__trigger\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#flush-collapse_3193_2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"flush-collapse_3193_2\">\n          Altered central multisensory processing in post-concussion vestibular dysfunction<span class=\"sp-before-icon\"><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h3>\n      <\/h2>\n      <div role=\"region\" id=\"flush-collapse_3193_2\" class=\"accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"flush-heading_3193_2\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordionFlush3193\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__content-wrap text-content\"><h4>Purpose<\/h4>\n<p>The purpose of this study is to understand the brain physiology characterizing protracted recovery after concussion, defined as symptoms lasting for greater than 30 days. We are using advanced imaging and clinical testing to study brain activation and connectivity, distinguishing patients with persistent post-concussive dizziness from patients recovering normally from concussion. This study is being conducted with collaborators from Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Funding is provided by the National Institutes of Health (grant no. We are assessing simulated and on-road driving performance in both the acute and subacute phase after concussion for comparison with clinical concussion assessments used commonly in primary care and concussion clinics. This study is being conducted with collaborators from the University of Georgia. The app is an electronic mobile version of evidence-based tools that were previously only available in paper format and was designed with input from clients and staff in the SHARE Military Initiative.
