Since 2000, our program has been one of only a few dedicated programs nationwide to meet the needs of these patients.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a disorder of consciousness?<\/h2>\n<p>Consciousness is defined as wakefulness or alertness with awareness of one\u2019s self and the environment. Severe brain injuries can result in a disorder of consciousness, leading to reduced arousal and abnormal or limited reactions to environmental stimuli. Disorders of Consciousness include conditions such as coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, and minimally conscious state, which significantly impact a patient&#8217;s ability to respond and interact.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\">\n\t<div class=\"idf-block text-content\">\n\t\t<h2>Key features of the Disorders of Consciousness program<\/h2>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--accordion idf-block accordion\" id=\"accordionFlush9289\">\n            <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n      <h3 class=\"accordion__title\" id=\"flush-heading_9289_1\">\n        <button class=\"accordion__trigger\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#flush-collapse_9289_1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"flush-collapse_9289_1\">\n          Individualized treatment plans<span class=\"sp-before-icon\"><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h3>\n      <\/h2>\n      <div role=\"region\" id=\"flush-collapse_9289_1\" class=\"accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"flush-heading_9289_1\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordionFlush9289\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__content-wrap text-content\"><p>The program provides highly individualized treatment plans tailored to the specific needs of each patient. The treatment focuses on medical stabilization, management of health needs (such as nutrition and neuropharmacology), facilitation of optimal positioning and mobility, and identification of environmental modifications that help facilitate arousal, communication, and cognitive recovery. A minimally conscious stimulation program is often used to enhance patient engagement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                                  <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n          <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n      <h3 class=\"accordion__title\" id=\"flush-heading_9289_2\">\n        <button class=\"accordion__trigger\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#flush-collapse_9289_2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"flush-collapse_9289_2\">\n          Interdisciplinary team<span class=\"sp-before-icon\"><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h3>\n      <\/h2>\n      <div role=\"region\" id=\"flush-collapse_9289_2\" class=\"accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"flush-heading_9289_2\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordionFlush9289\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__content-wrap text-content\"><p>Patients receive care from a consistent team of specialists, including physicians, case managers, therapists, neuropsychologists, and family counselors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                                  <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n          <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n      <h3 class=\"accordion__title\" id=\"flush-heading_9289_3\">\n        <button class=\"accordion__trigger\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#flush-collapse_9289_3\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"flush-collapse_9289_3\">\n          Assessment and tracking<span class=\"sp-before-icon\"><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h3>\n      <\/h2>\n      <div role=\"region\" id=\"flush-collapse_9289_3\" class=\"accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"flush-heading_9289_3\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordionFlush9289\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__content-wrap text-content\"><p>Each patient undergoes comprehensive assessments to determine medical status, mobility, muscle tone, arousal, communication, and cognitive functioning upon admission. Weekly assessments using the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) track the patient\u2019s progress to help guide treatment modifications toward greater levels of consciousness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                                  <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--blockquote\">\n  <div class=\"idf-block blockquote\">\n        <div class=\"blockquote__text-wrap\">\n      <span class=\"blockquote__icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n        <svg width=\"115\" height=\"86\">\n          <use xlink:href=\"#icon-ICON_Shepherd_Quote\"><\/use>\n        <\/svg>\n      <\/span>\n              <h2 class=\"blockquote__quote\">It was slow, but each day brought changes in what my son could comprehend. We support you with education, training, and resources to help you feel confident and included. You\u2019ll have opportunities to share goals, ask questions, and take part in hands-on training. These options may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Progressing to a rehabilitation level of care:<\/strong> Patients who show improvements may transition to a more active rehabilitation program where they can continue working on functional recovery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discharging home with supportive services:<\/strong> Patients may be discharged home with supportive services. In such cases, a transition support coordinator will be available to the family for 60 days post-discharge to answer questions and provide support during the transition from hospital to home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discharging to a long-term care facility:<\/strong> If further specialized care is needed, the team will assist in transitioning the patient to an appropriate facility that can meet their ongoing needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--link-block idf-block\">\n\t<div class=\"link-block\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2
